The storywriter of the film Babu Janardhanan revealed that the film deals with the difficulties that a middle class family faces and the vital role that religion plays in an individual’s life. Director of the film Lal Jose clarified that the film is not a satire of Christianity or any other religion. It rather deals with the emotional experiences of a widower, though conversion is mentioned.
The setting of the film dates back to 1970s. Prabhakaran is a student at Thiruvalla Marthoma College. He is madly in love with a Christian girl named Lillikutty. But the girl’s parents insist that he converts to Christianity if he wants to marry their daughter. So, he willingly converts to Christianity and is re-christened as Samuel. But he knows deep in his mind that he will not be accepted into the main stream Christianity. Meanwhile, Lillikutty dies, leaving him and their three daughters. He then moves to Peermade with his family after getting a job with the electricity board. The rest of the film is on how the family goes through lots of sufferings and troubles in the name of religion.
Salimkumar plays the role of Samuel, quit diverse from his usual role as a comedian. Newcomer Mukta pays Samuel’s youngest daughter. She is a student of eighth standard at St. Augustine’s Higher Secondary School. Samvritha and Suja Karthika play the role of Samuel’s other two daughters. Manoj Pillai, an associate of Santhosh Sivan handles the camera for the film. ‘Achanurangatha Veedu’ has chances of creating controversy as it deals with a sensitive subject that includes religion and conversion.
