Pokkiri Raja – Movie Review

Directed by debutante Vyshakh, the movie Pokkiri Raja brings together Mammootty and Prithviraj for the first time on screen. It also marks the debut of actress Shreya Saran in Malayalam industry. Pokkiri Raja in one word can be categorized as a mass masala entertainer.

The movie begins with a flash back story of two brothers Raja ( Mammootty ) and Surya ( Prithviraj ). Raja and Surya enter into a fight with a rival gang and gets involved in certain scuffles with the gang. Raja elopes to Madurai and later becomes a very popular don there. With a walrus moustache, broken English and his travel in BMW, Raja tries to create laughs among the audience.

The first half of the story deals with Surya, Raja’s brother. Both Raja and Surya is capable of handling any number of people at a stretch, sing, dance and even capable of giving punch dialogues every now and then. At one point of time Surya enters into a trouble and that marks the entry of Raja to rescue his brother.

The movie is somewhat similar to a Tamil film with lots of actions, songs and punch dialogues. Mammootty and Prithviraj looks good on screen as usual. Shreya Saran plays the love lady to Prithviraj in the film and has done her role impressively. There is nothing much in her role. Siddique and Riyas Khan play the baddies in the film. They look like caricatures at the hands of the heroes. Suraj and Salim Kumar handle their usual role of comedy and tries to create a good number of counter jokes in the film.

Director Vyshakh has been successful in giving both the heroes equal importance in the film. The fist look of the heroes in the film is impressive and stylish. Writers Siby K Thomas and Udayakrishna have succeeded in allotting almost equal footage to them. Jassie Gift’s music suites the mood of the film and sequences. Shaji’s visuals too is impressive.

On the whole we can say that though a lengthy film, and without much in the storyline, Pokkiri Raja is a mass masala entertainer. There are some good comedies and some good sequenes. Nothing much cannot be expected. A relaxing film on the whole.
